In no period of time in history but the last century, had there been so many momentous events: revolutions, world wars, the transition from imperialism, monarchy and feudalism to freedom, democracy and socialism. And indeed, undreamt of technological breakthroughs and innovations have transformed the way we live forever.
Simultaneously, another dramatic development has been the global explosion of media which continues to have an impact on mankind. The ever-growing power of media has given birth to mass media and popular culture. The advent of the internet has fundamentally altered the way the world has access to information and entertainment. Creative and sensitive minds now express themselves effectively through the digital media. The interaction between the creator and the audience is quicker, more personal and efficient.
There is no denying that the growth of media has been spectacular. However, its growth is alarming too. The growth so far has been quantitative in nature rather than qualitative in character. The concept of quality is restricted to glamour and technical refinement. The new-found power of media is not wholly directed to the search for the Truth but often dictated by questionable motives and for promoting a hedonistic outlook on life. Of course, it must be appreciated that the media has made several significant contributions that have benefited the society at large by its explorations and revelations. But the overall impression seems to suggest that the media has not been able to fulfill its responsibilities to society due to a deeper conflict of interests.
Probably the time has come to review the role of the multifaceted institution of media which can go beyond mere information and entertainment and instead help establish a more progressive and evolved existence for man. Is it possible that this unprecedented technological advancement is paving the way to establish a higher level of consciousness in man? Can media play its right role in bringing about the change of consciousness for a better and more meaningful life?
We hope the proposed symposium will help us reflect on these issues as a prelude to a deeper introspection by the participants and eventually impact a much wider fraternity of artists, media professionals and students. |
